Sunali Narshai is a visual artist from Durban, South Africa. With a bold and graphic style, Narshai’s work is grounded in drawing. She approaches figuration in the abstract to explore a diasporic identity that remains fluid, and sensitive to an ever-changing environment. Working primarily on paper, Narshai uses a combined approach of calligraphic tools, animation, painting, and collage to develop compositions. Concerned with versatility and diversity of form, she considers notions of self as spaces of infinite wonder and possibility.
Narshai’s work has been exhibited at Mtl En Arts, the National Arts Festival in Makanda, the Lift Off Global Film Festival, and on the fringe in Cape Town and Helsinki. Centered on creating meaningful spaces in the arts, she is an independent writer, designer, and administrator for creatives, securing over $350,000 for projects in the arts since 2020. Narshai is a Rhodes University graduate with a BA in Fine Art, and member of the Brown Girl Doc Mafia. She shares a studio with her husband at their home in Montreal.
